The Heart Clinic and Hospital was founded by the legendary doctor and a great humanist Dr. Nani Guha whose mission in life was to use his medical knowledge for alleviating the sufferings of the common people. He was emotionally moved from witnessing how the people were deprived of proper medical care because of poverty. The Calcutta Heart Clinic and Hospital was started by him as a modest venture to provide quality medical care to the common people at an affordable cost. After the untimely demise of Dr. Guha in 1991, the hospital went through very bad times and was on the verge of closing down. In 1995 at the request of the Guha family another great humanist and an illustrious academician Professor Sushil Kumar Mukherjee took up the reins to revitalize the hospital. A band of dedicated young doctors, nurses and paramedic staff came forward to help in this endeavour and a new Governing Body was constituted. The hospital was then housed in a small one-storied building with dilapidated infrastructure, but through the untiring efforts of the new staff and dedicated service to the patients, the hospital regained its reputation and soon earned the confidence of the people. There were many hurdles in the way and conspiratorial attacks from vested interest, but under the inspiring leadership of Professor Sushil Kumar Mukherjee we could overcome all obstacles. Step by step the hospital began to expand its sphere of activities, adding new divisions, constructing new buildings and acquiring modern, sophisticated medical equipments. Our newest venture is to start the Sister Nivedita Nursing Academy to train up nursing staff. Through all these activities we had before us the vision of our leaders Dr. Guha and Professor Mukherjee to build a new type of hospital whose raison d’être is not earning maximum profit and amassing wealth, but to serve the people afflicted with ailment. We have constantly endeavoured to build up an ethical standard among the doctors, nurses, paramedic staff and helpers so that they all work together work as one team with single-minded devotion to serve the patients. Even after they are discharged the patients talk about the loving care that they received from the doctors, nurses, medical attendants, and all the helpers. This is the signature of Heart Clinic service.

While we were in the phase of expansion and consolidation the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and we had streams pf patients afflicted with the deadly disease. This was a challenge to the Hospital. This was a novel pathogen there was no known protocol for treatment. But the entire staff rose to face the challenge. A part of the hospital premises was isolated for Covid patients, necessary medicines, and equipments were procured and an entire contingent of staff including doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, and helpers were dedicated for Covid treatment. Our doctors kept themselves abreast of the latest scientific research while providing treatment. Our record of curing the patients has earned the appreciation of the medical fraternity and the society at large.  However, fighting the pandemic took a heavy toll on our financial resources. Faced with the crisis we knocked at the doors of the people, and they responded munificently.  In a rare gesture the staff donated a part of their salary to the hospital.  We are now battling the second wave of the pandemic with confidence and dedication.

We acknowledge with gratitude that we have reached where we are today because of the unstinted support and cooperation of our numerous friends and well-wishers and the single-minded dedication of our staff from top to bottom. We hope that in the coming days we shall continue to get this support to enable us to better serve the suffering humanity.
